The BMW R 50/2 VIN 644869 was manufactured on March 21st, 1967 and delivered on March 28th, 1967 to the BMW importer Butler & Smith in New York City. The bike was equipped with a bench seat.
Period motorcycle magazine testers praised the BMW R50. In 1955 road test, The Motor Cycle said:
" Road Behaviour of the R50 is extremely gentlemanly. Indeed, it is difficult to visualize a machine of conventional conception being more smooth, quiet, comfortable and clean to ride."
